The BLM movement and racial violence against Asian Americans that occurred during quarantine inspired me to write about a related subject matter. By writing, it was an outlet for me to express all the thoughts and emotions that were running through my mind. The novel consists of my exploration of empathy, my parents from China, learned languages, the juxtaposition of minority struggles in the U.S., and also the struggles of minorities in China.

I began writing the novel in the beginning of 2020 and had my first call with the publisher by the end of the year. The novel content itself, however, was created during my trip to Copenhagen. I felt like what I was doing at the moment was not intriguing enough and I had that gut feeling that I wanted to be a writer. As the actions of our society began to break my heart even further, I found things to include in my story besides information about myself. Overall, this whole process has taken me ten or so months as I went through many rounds of editing with my editor and ensured that my thoughts were accurately portrayed.

Ultimately, I hope that my novel will give out a new sense of the Asian American narrative, one that is different from my Chinese and white friends. Furthermore, I hope that people will realize that COVID-19 did not fuel the racial violence of Asian Americans. Instead, invisibility is something that is systematically progressed, and when COVID-19 hit, the situation was just further blown out of proportion. Even if only 30 people read my novel, there’s a possibility that those 30 people will read it and see something different. That is what is most important to me as knowledge can combat that invisibility. By spreading my knowledge, I hope that these acts of violence will begin to de-escalate.

After my novel is published, I would like to continue writing and publishing. As for now, I don’t have anything planned yet as my every single thought has been put into this novel. However, in the future, I hope to begin a new piece of work when something significant happens later on in my life as the inspiration of my stories and ideas are drawn from my own personal experiences. In the meantime, I hope to enjoy the rest of my senior year before beginning my job as a consultant in Houston.

Howdy! My name is Ruby Wei, and I am a senior from Houston, Texas majoring in Finance. My pronouns are she, her, and hers.

Currently, I am in the process of publishing a novel, hopefully around December 20th, and planning on shipping out the physical copies sometime during January. I have always loved writing and felt like it was always in me as my grandpa was super into calligraphy and my dad emphasized the importance of familiarizing myself with my roots. He pushed me to immerse myself in the Chinese language and to read literature, specifically classics. Because of that, I’ve always been interested in literature. After having to quit swimming, the sport that I had grown to love, I began to pick up writing as it was extremely therapeutic for me. Since then, writing has become a true passion of mine.
